Because every democracy needs some structure, some guidelines, some rules in order to function and not fall apart, here are ours:

There is no "lead." This group is a democracy. We take turns choosing the literature, we all participate in discussing, we all do the research, invest the time, do the listening. Don't try to be the leader, take control, or generally moderate. We're an intelligent bunch of adults and this is an egalitarian society. Let's act that way.

We've got busy lives and hectic schedules. There's no need to monitor and regulate who finished the book, who didn't, who participated, who didn't. It'll all come out in the wash. If a member isn't holding up their end of the bargain, we'll notice. And we'll do something about it, as a group.

In these types of groups, people tend to get very involved in their interpretations of the text. That's okay. Just realize that someone disagreeing with you doesn't mean they don't like you or respect your opinion. You need to be able to debate without your feelings getting hurt or your ego bruised. We're coming from a myriad of backgrounds and experiences, so expect disagreement. In fact, learn to revel in it.

Be ready to discuss! Don't just say you didn't like it. That's not enough! If you didn't like it, tell us why. Be ready with your comments, thoughts, opinions. Participation and communication are key in an online society. Do your part.

Other than those few things, I think a reading group is a reading group is a reading group. Practice consideration and common sense and we'll get along just fine. For those of you interested in the group who aren't members already, contact one of the above members or drop me an email. If we're accepting members, we'll check you out and let you know.

Whether you are in the group or not, I'd love to have further discussions about particular books or authors over email. Regardless, I encourage you all to read read read and stay up to date on current events and please oh please remember to support your local independent book store!
